From the desk of Tony Paris

Dear Families,

I would like to welcome our Players and parents back for another fun filled season of soccer at Puryear Park. The facility looks superb after some TLC and with nature taking care of the rest of the maintainence!
Great excitement waits as we enter year 3 of the Everton Way and our relationship with Everton FC. We have record numbers registered within our Academy which is of course the building block of the club and bodes well for the health of the program in years to come. After hosting our first coaches meeting last week, I think it fair to say the Coaches are excited and ready to make the difference once again with structured and meaningful sessions, that will help our players and teams excel.  The standard of our coaching slate is in my opinion unrivalled at any club. Not only from a coaching standpoint, but from a mentorship standpoint as well..  Our Core values are as important to us now as they were from inception, of which I will feature for your perusal once again.
Ownership-Integrity- Accountability-Loyalty-Respect-Unity
The normal weather pattern continues to frustrate our training sessions as we try to prepare for the season. However we have to put the player’s safety first and ask for your cooperation in this important matter. Judgment calls will be made in order to access a threatening storm and save wasted journeys to the park, however weather patterns change rapidly and what appeared to be a major storm, ends up a storm in a teacup. Of course we have no way of knowing this so please bare with us in these tricky situations.
On a final note, please be sure to make this a positive year for your child and an enjoyable experience for all concerned.  Good Luck to all of our Everton FL teams!  See you on the fields.
Sincerely

Tony Paris

Trip to Everton UK
4 Everton FL players trained at the Everton Academy in the UK

Everton FL goes to Everton UK!

            Art by Immeke
Four of Everton FL player’s visited the Everton Academy in March.  This was a fantastic experience! The kids trained at Finch Farm where the Academy Boys train and the Everton professionals (the first team) trains and Walton Park where the Everton Ladies train..  The Academy training is very fast paced and the athlete’s in the Academy are very skilled and serious about the game of soccer.

On Monday the girls trained at Walton Park with the Everton Ladies.  The boys were given a tour of Finch Farm where the Everton boys train and the Everton 1st team (professional EPL team trains). All of the kids found the training very serious and focused.

Tuesday brought the boys back to Finch Farm for an afternoon session. They trained with the U13-15 boys teams and then went to a U15B Everton vs. Liverpool Academy game.  Everton won 2-0, and the game was some of the best soccer any of us have experienced!  The girls trained at Finch Farm with Fara Williams, the Everton team Captain!   As Immeke says, “This is Way Excellent!”

On Wednesday, the girls did a running/technical session at Finch Farm with Shaun Harris, and the boys trained with the U13-15 boys.  The session was very technical and very fast paced. No pictures were allowed to be taken at Finch Farm for security of the children who train there.

Friday was so much fun!  We took a tour of Goodison Park and learned the history of Everton footbul Club! Our tour guide was an older woman who been an Everton fan since she was born!  The best part of this tour was when we walked up the tunnel to the field where the players enter from the locker rooms.  The Everton fight song was played as the kids walked onto the field!

Game Day!
Everton 2 vs. Bolton 0

Wow!  Our players met and got signatures from Tim Howard, Carlo Nash, Phil Neville, and Mikel Arteta before the game began!  Goodison Stadium was packed! As you know, since the game was aired live on FSN, the first half of the game had very little action.  The second half led Everton to a 2-0 win over Bolton.  Tim Howard is an amazing goalkeeper as was Mikel Arteta who scored the first goal.  The crowd chanted and sang songs throughout the game. What an awesome experience!
Comments from the kids who attended the Everton Academy:

Our training sessions so far have been on hard turf, which increased the pace of the game tremendously.  We plan to enjoy St. Patty’s Day dow by the city center and tour the Everton Complex on Friday (Goodison Stadium).  We will attend the Everton vs. Bolton game on Saturday.  Go Toffee’s! -Christina
So far my experience at the Everton Academy has been spectacular.  Hopefully this experience will make me a better soccer athlete.  The soccer sessions here are much harder that our practices in Florida.   This has been a very good experience! -Victor

Wow! England is legit! Yesterday we went to training.  Christina went to the U16 practice and I went to the U14 practice.  The girls were all rally amazing. I taught them the ‘Coach Brooke’ stretch.  Today we will be trained by Fara Williams , the Everton team captain – that’s waaaay excellent! I miss my own Everton ladies. Can’t wait to get back and tell them everything.  I Everton! -Immeke

Our training has been great.  The coach was excellent – he moved into drills very well and everything flowed smoothly. We did many drills that involved passing and shooting. All of the training was very fast paced due to the level of the kids that play in the Academy.  Finch Farm is a huge complex with six fields and the 1st team trains there as well as the Academy.    - Stevie

Everton Florida College Night

THE EVERTON 3RD ANNUAL COLLEGE NIGHT

Everton Florida hosted its 3rd Annual College night at the Holiday Inn Hotel with a good turnout of future College bound Athletes.
Parents and players alike were advised on how to get to College along with the common mistakes made in the process. In attendance were four College Coaches along with Everton’s three DOCs and two current players from Saint Leo University, who shared their experiences from both DI schools to DII.  This was quite a hit with the players as they told it like it was! Everton’s Executive Director Tony Paris had said after the presentation, he is always amazed on how little information is out there for players looking to play at college, which makes nights like this invaluable.  All three DOCs have considerable college coaching experience and are always willing to share their knowledge with the clubs players/parents.

News Update

Executive Director Tony Paris has been awarded a NSCAA Premier A license after his attendance at the 7 day course hosted in Ft Lauderdale several weeks ago. He passed on all counts with flying colors! This now adds to Paris’ collection of awards and takes him to three A Licenses with the other two coming from United States Soccer Federation and his UEFA A License he acquired back in Europe over a 2 year period.

President Steve Kulavic had said of Paris, "this is a credit to the man and also shows his desire to constantly improve and give back. This is a lesson for all of us that the learning curve goes on indefinitely." After this accomplishment, Paris has now been invited on to the NSCAA Coaching Staff, which he gladly accepted. This will now allow him to pass on to coaches Statewide the knowledge he has amassed over the years of both playing and coaching. This position will run alongside his current position at Everton Florida.
Goal Keeper Training

Goalkeeper Training will resume in August starting on 8/3. Training will be held on Monday and Thursday nights from 7:30-8:15 and 8:15-9PM. Younger ages will train from 7:30-8:15 and U13 and up will train from 8:15-9. Check back for training schedule/curriculum.

A DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE

Much has been written about College scholarships and how to acquire one. Well, I want to put my perspective on this topic and clarify my thoughts.
As we move towards the end of the season for many, the thoughts of Tryouts are on the lips of everyone, with players and parent alike being promised all sorts of things to try something new?
My first thought is to beware of Club Coaches that promise the world and guarantee College scholarships to players that either play for them or are looking to jump ship for this very reason. I want to make it absolutely clear that no club coach can promise this? So, Buyer beware!
In some situations players do get a scholarship, but where to? Perhaps to D1 schools that are not soccer power houses and tucked away in the middle of nowhere! Perhaps it’s better to consider a top quality D2 school in these situations, in a strong conference and a chance to play for a national championship! Remember playing time is important so go to a school where this is a possibility.
The lure of playing for club with aspirations of a State cup Championship always seems attractive to players who are looking to play at Collegiate level. However this can be a fallacy for these very reasons.
As en Ex- College coach of 10 years I can assure you that State Cup teams did not impress me, I was never interested in teams and results, but players and the coach that coached them. I will quantify that statement. Did the coach prepare the individual for College and the demands that are put on players over that 4 year period? Or was it just team driven with no value on the individual?  Did they instill the core values that are so important to make it at the next level? There is a marked difference between the two, coaching to win and coaching to develop are two different things. There one thing getting a player to College and then graduating?
As we see 75% of players from the age of 14 and up leaving the game we need to be sensitive to burnout and overzealous coaching.
No other club can boast what we have at Everton FL; many clubs vie for an affiliation with a club like Everton Football Club only to be turned down repeatedly.
We are in an enviable position as we continue to grow and have other clubs in the Tampa Bay area wanting to join a winning team and coach with a winning formula! There are no shortcuts to success, so you need to entrust your child’s future to a club that has professional expertise with people that have played and coached at the professional level, with the highest licensure in the world of soccer!  But above all a club that holds integrity above all else with no compromise.
Rules and Regulations:
On a final note:
Nothing feels better than being told by a coach from another club you are good player and that you should wear the colors of their club... Of course this is a sales pitch.
If these approaches are made before tryouts is an infringement of FYSA poaching rules and highly illegal. Please be sure to let me know if this happens to you, as they might not value the rules, however we do and take this extremely serious as the playing field needs to be equal if we are to succeed.
So, on that note I look forward to seeing you all at Everton Football Club’ Talent ID In May and one week Later at Everton FL Tryouts.

Sincerely,
Tony Paris

Tosh Farrell works with Everton Florida Coaches

Everton Florida coaches had a fantastic opportunity to learn from Tosh Farrell after the Everton Talent Identification!

Remmington Pimm's Talent ID Experience!

I became curious about soccer at age eleven after seeing a picture of my grandfather when he played for The Cardiff Corinthians in the 1930's. In those days our fathers did their best job they could in coaching us and learned everything they could from books. The idea that kids could be involved with or try out for an established club like Everton F.C. was not even possible in those days.

My son Remi found out that Everton F.C. was coming to St. Pete for a talent evaluation from a friend at Galactics.  We talked about how cool it would be to get involved and to get some feedback from the coaches. He didn't know until the day we came out for tryouts that is was actually an opportunity to be chosen to train In Liverpool with Everton. At that point Remi was excited and doing a whole lot of thinking.

The coaches and staff were very hospitable and professional towards all of the kids and parents. It was awesome to see the Everton Logo on the clubhouse and be a part of that experience. Tosh and the coaches studied all of the drills and really watched each player intently. There were children being evaluated in all age catagories. Remi really wanted to stand out and was aware of the fact that he was one of the younger atheletes present. We were all really excited when we recieved a call from the club about Remi attending speed trials. The trials were held at an indoor facility due to the rainy weather and when the trials began Tosh put the boys at ease and congratulated them on being there. Tosh made them aware of the speed of the game and and the standards expected at the Academy. The trials consisted of a series of sprints and long jumps and the kids competing were timed and measured. Afterwards, the parents were thanked by Tosh and Tony Paris. A few days later we received an email confirming the invitation extended to Remi. When Remi got the news he actually picked his mother off of the floor in a big hug!

Remi trains four times a week and plays every day. He has looked up and learned as much as he can about Everton F.C. His has big dreams and goals and is driven with so much passion. He is fully aware of the prestige of the Everton Academy Program and wants to play well. The Tampa Tribune and The Everton WWW did stories on his experience so far. It is impossible to put into words how exciting all of this is for Remi and all of us. It is an amazing opportunity that is being extended by Everton F.C. through Florida's partnership in the area. Please keep your fingers crossed for Remi as he appreciates this very much.

Sincerely,
Don Pimm

Tryout Questions to Consider

It’s that time of year again when players are trying to decide where they should tryout and where they should play?

Before making a decision on where you should play, you need to look at the following, and then make an informed decision:

  • Who will be the Head coach of the team you will play for?
  • What are the coach’s qualifications? His/Her objectives?
  • What are the coach’s philosophies?
  • Does the Coach have tenure with the club soccer program?
  • What experience does the coach possess?
  • Are they looking to develop?
  •  Is it win at all costs (The quick fix)
  • Who is the DOC of the club and what are his qualifications?
  • Clubs goals and objectives?
  • The infrastructure of the club

What does the club offer by way of further opportunities?

  • Free Training with professional coaches?
  • Camps?
  • College referral?
  • Overseas Travel?
  • Mentorship?
  • Extra training opportunities

The Team!

  • Is the chemistry good on the team?
  • Do you like playing for this particular team
  • Does the team offer you what you are looking for as a player? I.e.; Tournaments, travel, exposure to college coaches further development
  • Quality training

The coach.

  • What qualification does the coach possess?
  • Is the coach successful?
  • Are they renowned for player development?
  • Do they possess good training abilities
  • Do you feel this coach can get the best out of you and help you develop? \Do you want to play for this coach?
  • Does the coach shout loudly from the side line thus unnerving you?
  • Is the coach a positive force or a negative one?
  • Does the coach understand your psychology?

Things to be wary of?

  • Coaches that promise success. No one can guarantee a win, or something similar.
  • Coaches who boast that they will get you a college scholarship? Once again this is hard to predict... All coaches try, but ultimately it’s on the back of hard work, Talent and dedication.
  • A guarantee of a starting position? Once again this should be by reward and not a right.

The best advice I can give is that if you suspect that it seems too good to be true then it probably is. Be diligent and do your homework on all aspects of the club and the team

What does being a part of the Everton Family mean to you?

  • Being a part of one of the most successful youth development clubs in Europe if not the world.
  • To wear the coveted Everton Jersey week in and week out!
  • Proven training curriculum
  • Opportunities to train in Europe
  • Training by Everton Staff
  • Team travel to Europe
  • Part of the Everton family within the , (10 clubs)
  • The only club in Florida to have this affiliation with Everton.
  • A team you can follow on TV that plays in the English Premiership!

And much more….

We at Everton Football Club have the added support of one of the biggest clubs in the world of Football and commonly known as the peoples club amongst Soccer purists. This is our model and a strategy we will follow through out our partnership with the Premiership club. The questions listed above are all pertinent questions you need to ask both yourself and the coach, before you make an informed decision as to where you might play.

So, please check our tryout dates and be a part of the

EVERTON WAY!!!
